I'm not sure if I can agree with the idea that they work at microspeed -- their development speed is fairly consistent and honestly is on par with substantially larger indie studios if you look at World 3-4 development and Salem development, with bumps only coming up when they are stymied on tough problems. J&L seem to work well as a pair and have a formula down that keeps them going too. They're just very ambitious in the scope of what they hope to accomplish and try out experimental solutions which don't always turn out well. In terms of development that's not a problem, you just keep trying until you get a solution that works out for the game. Unfortunately, as players we see it very differently when we're given something, adjust to it, and then it gets changed. In both Haven and Salem there have consistently been shitfits thrown when mechanics didn't work out perfectly when they were first implemented. I feel this has perhaps slowed down their experimental process as they have become more and more reluctant to release just anything out into the wild, but those are just my speculations.
I'm also not sure I can agree with the idea that they're wasting an audience. The bulk of the players aren't visiting the forums and instead are elsewhere waiting for Hafen to come out. The moment that Hafen comes out word will spread like wildfire and people will be jumping on board again -- which is why I imagine J&L have been trying to keep hype and press to a minimum about the project until it's in a state that people are likely to enjoy. Players and testers are nice to have and essential to working out the kinks, but you don't want a flood of people as the bulk of them won't enjoy a game that's too rough.
