The moment client sources are released, you will have at least a handful of FINE AND DAPPER GENTLEMEN writing a complementary server, so...

Well, as kimya so rightly pointed out, the server is the game. There's virtually no game mechanics whatsoever implemented in the client, so writing a new server would essentially be the same thing as writing a new game. You'd just get the rendering engine for free, essentially. Of course, this is already pointed out on the documentation page.
