Game Development: World 5

Postby jorb » Sun Mar 13, 2011 2:50 am

The Party Central Committee has deemed it necessary -- after having had compelling arguments presented to it by esteemed comrades of the Inner Party -- to undo the present bourgeois world order. Several revolutionary changes will be made in order to stamp out the capitalist and imperialist modes of thinking that has plagued the fourth world in order to ensure the safe transition of the means of production into the hands of the toiling masses in the fifth.

Curiosities, Learning & LP
A spectre is haunting the Hearthlands -- the spectre of a new LP system. Under the old capitalist model of LP acquisition, LP was acquired on the basis of tasks performed by a hearthling. Under the New Economic Policy -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEZJXI-IQS4 -- LP will instead be acquired through a special new class of items, curiosities. Curiosities can be acquired in many ways. Some curiosities are craftable, some are foregables, some are small animals and others yet will be randomly given out at various stages in other crafting, building and/or otherwise work related proletarian tasks.

Curiosities have three dimensions along which they vary.
LP: The amount of LP given upon having studied the item in question.
Mental Weight: The item's mental weight. (More on this below)
Time: The time it takes to study the item.

The Character Sheet & Studying
The character sheet has been slightly redone to better conform to the new world order. You will notice that the ancestral worship screen has been merged with the personal beliefs screen, and that the old personal beliefs icon now represents a new study screen. In said study screen you will find an inventory. Said inventory is your study inventory. Only curiosities can be placed in this new study inventory. When a curiosity is placed in the study inventory, studying of the curiosity will commence.

Further, you will notice that the study screen presents you with two values, Unused Attention, and Attention Limit. Your attention limit is equal to your character's intelligence. Your unused attention is equal to your attention minus the total combined mental weight of all items currently in your study inventory. You cannot place an item in your study inventory if you do not have enough unused attention to match its mental weight. Some curiosities, quite simply, require a fair amount of intelligence to study.

Once successfully placed in the study inventory, studying of the curiosity will commence of itself. Once the piechart on the curiosity has come full circle the curiosity will be consumed and your character will be rewarded with learning points. Note: Study time passes on curiosities regardless of whether you character is logged in or not. You will, in other words, keep studying the items in your study inventory even when you are logged out. Consequently, some curiosities will need to be in your study inventory for quite some time before they are consumed.

The LP acquired from studying a curiosity can be used to purchase skills and level up skill values as per the old model.

Much revolutionary progress along the path that leads to equality, freedom and genocide will thus be made. Invariably.

Bootstrap LP, Crafts & Builds
Crafts & Builds are no longer doled out upon simple acquisition of a skill. While most crafts and builds still require you to possess a certain skill, they will now also only become available to you once your character has seen (more on that below) all the inputs required for the craft or build. For example: Your character will have the stone axe recipe available to him only when he has chipped a stone off of a boulder, and picked a branch. Notice that seeing in this context is not the same as simply viewing the craft input in an inventory, for example that of a chest. Seeing rather implies rightful first acquisition of the item in question, such as when harvesting a plant, removing a dried hide from a drying frame or picking a freshly baked bread from an oven. Crafting an item automatically implies seeing it. Note: Some contextual items and builds will require ad hoc knowledge of some item that is reasonable for it. For example: Pipes only become available to you once you have seen clay and tobacco, even though tobacco isn't a part of the crafting recipe per se. The same holds true for tea pots, which will only become available to you once you have seen tea.

Every time you see a new item you will be given 50LP. When you pick your first branch, for example, you get 50 lp. You get no LP for branches after the first. When starting a new character, most of your early LP will come from seeing lots of new items for the first time.

Other minor changes
Fishing should now deplete fishing spots much faster. They will regrow rather quickly, but they will on the whole yield significantly less fish.
Bread and fishing poles have been removed from the chest in the character creation room.

As a consequence of all this, world four and all existing (bourgeois) characters will be deleted, and a new socialist world order will rise from the ruins of her old societies.

DANN STEIGT AUS DEN TRÜMMERN DER ALTEN GESELLSCHAFT DIE SOZIALISTISCHE WELTREPUBLIK!

The server will be up again once a new world has been generated, which should take a few hours.

Das war alles. Avanti, Comrades!

EDIT:

Forgot to mention, only one of each type of curiosity possible at any given time.
"The psychological trials of dwellers in the last times will be equal to the physical trials of the martyrs. In order to face these trials we must be living in a different world."
