Could've made the attack/defense bars individualized, as in only applying to one target at a time. That means every opponent has a different defense bar and attack bar.

Legitimately attacking in groups would be useless.

Wouldn't individual attack/defence bars be _better_ for the group?
The defender would need to worry about keeping defence up on multiple fronts, and if anyone was unaware that was how it worked, then they'd probably just be taking a but load of damage before getting on to the second guy.

If he is a stronger, higher agi target then its worse. Taking down 1 defense bar is easier for a group then them all having to do it individually.

Not only that, it would be impossible to keep your defense up against 3 guys.

assuming the individual defense/attack bar scenario is put into play

Single group
A. UA 100, Melee 33

Multiple attackers
B. UA 50, Melee 33
C. UA 50, Melee 33
D. UA 50, Melee 33

A. engages B, C and D follow.
A. Uses oaken stance along with dash
B C D use jump+punch combo, B uses bloodlust

A Can only hold his defense for so long against C and D, he would have to micro-manage his defense bar to win the fight. Somewhere along the line C either breaks his defense or D does, valerous strike, fight over.

It wouldn't make attacking in groups useless at all. Your maneuverer only go so far.

Combat interface is awful as it is, do you really want to make it more complicated?

It's not quite broken, it's just too complicated
for most people to really understand.

if you're a person with 100 UA you can actually
take on 3 people with 50 if you know what you're
doing =p

Not easy, but it's possible.

It also seems like most of the combat system are designed offensively, and doesn't seem to have much pure defensive or pure supportive skills to learn either.

Like what if you can divert the opponent's attack with a counter, to diminish the defense loss, and reflect half the attack back towards them (50% of attack sent to you, is done on their defense)?

Note that this only affects the combat attack and defense bar, and not actual damage inflicted, meaning it's like a maneuver that requires a condition to work.

A counter wouldn't need any UA to utilize and is more powerful the stronger the opponent. It does however need proper timing and training to do so, since a counter, is the art of intervening the opponent's strike and returning it to them.

Make it cost a good amount of initiative and make only when your attack is low, or when combat advantage is against you (with effectiveness increasing as you are more disadvantaged in combat).

Countering a bear with typical hnh content though... Isn't very effective, so maybe there are some restrictions in it's use?

Apart from running away there is no such thing as "pure defense".
