They turn you into a light source for five minutes or so after you eat them.

either a lot, or they are rare in the caves.. because i haven't seen that many.

I've seen around ten throughout three caves with an Exploration*Perception of 987

...arn't clogs easy enough? they are like perhaps, the easiest wearable thing to make in the game.

Infact, if you make crappy enough clogs, they will never wear out.
