Planned downtime: Harddrive replacement

Postby loftar » Mon Jan 16, 2012 4:37 am

The server is having some problems with one of its hard drives, as originally mentioned here. It should not be causing any actual problems, but Hetzner apparently needs to shut down the server in order to replace the hard drive. I have appointed with them to have this happen at 19:00 UTC later today, so around that time, the game and website will be down.

Just so you know.

For those of us world time challenged, how many hours from now is that?

UTC is GMT, just different terms US EST is GMT -5, CST is GMT -6, (those in MST and PST can figure it out from there). In the world of the internet, it's just best to have one clock set to GMT, another to local time so you always know. ;)

Use this to check.

Seems like 12 more hours at the time of this cost.

It shouldn't necessarily need to take more than five minutes, but I guess it depends on how long Hetzner needs to do the physical replacement and whether any unexpected problems turn up afterwards.

What I find a bit weird is that they can't replace it without powering down, if anything.

Power running threw it = might have a spark to last a life time.

Plus you never know what it could mess up while on, when you do it. So they are being careful. Which is better then I can say to those that try and steal copper or a live transformer (shoes have been found left from some).
