Regarding perception, I hope that the plan is to work out a better system in the long run, rather than doing away with it all together. A general quality 'range' that gets narrowed down more specifically could be one solution. Another solution could be ala Diablo. You get somebody else to 'identify' the item for you, at which point you know what Q it is.
