Planned downtime: Harddrive replacement (yet again!)

Postby loftar » Wed Aug 08, 2012 7:20 pm

The server is having hard drive troubles yet again. I must say this is beginning to seem weird, seeing as how it's the third disk failing in less than a year. Either way, as usual, the server needs to be taken down again in order to replace the disk. I'll contact Hetzner shortly and update you on when it's going to happen. I'll also try to nag them about the cause of these frequent failures.

Update: Hetzner will replace the drive at 2012-08-08, 21:00 UTC, so I'll shut the server down a bit before that (which means, of course, that the website will be down as well). It might take a bit before it comes back, because they said they'll try to look into the frequent failures and debug it a bit.

Like last time (and the time before): since the game data is redundantly stored, there should be no danger to the world or any characters. However, I'll be having the game server itself shut down in the meantime just to be on the safe side. It is possible, though not yet certain, that minimap data will be lost.

It's common practice for this hoster to use old(used) disk. Check SMART on "new" disk to see Power_On_Hours. After this you may ask support to replace with realy new disk... :)

You should note, however, that the new drive will need RAID resynchronization, which usually takes about 10 hours or so, before I can restart the server. So don't hold your breath until it's up again. :)

This explains why the lag has been getting worse the last few days :(
I have been getting more unexplained disconnects lately too (Why can't the clients tell me why i was disconnected (time out, protocol, server command, etc.)

I think its pretty obvious the server is paging itself to death. It appears that program code or data relevant to my session is very frequently being swapped to the disk in a second or less. If I make my next click in 1/2 second I can usually not get another lag for that click. Constant paging 24/7 would certainly look like an I/O bottleneck and constitutes severe endurance testing for the hard drive. Maybe a hard drive manufacturer would pay you to test their products?

Jorb and Loftar, please keep trying to keep this game running and thanks for the info. :)
