Planned downtime: OS upgrade

Postby loftar » Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:59 pm

Dear bots and bagousers,

I'm planning to upgrade the server to the latest version of Debian in about two hours (2014-04-11 22:00 UTC). I'll do it in two steps, in which I'll first reboot to the new kernel that I've just compiled (the stock Debian kernel is 3.2, which is still affected by the stable-pages issue which caused the World of Lag, so we don't very much want to use that one), and only when I've confirmed that it works, I'll do the upgrade and then reboot again.

During the upgrade itself, the web pages and forums will be up, but the game server will be down. During the reboots themselves, the whole server will, obviously, be unavailable. Hopefully there won't be any unexpected problems cropping up, in which case it should all be over in perhaps half an hour or so.

What is this upgrade meant to accomplish?

As I wrote, it is to upgrade to the latest version of Debian. The server is still running 6.0, which is becoming deprecated.

-He needs to upgrade his OS, which can only be done by compiling the kernel to exclude the stable-pages hell-lag. Won't really accomplish anything for you, but will keep his system up-to-date, which may mean benefits for you who knows.

edit: Fucking loftar ninjas.

You will be able to enjoy such monumental benefits as the home page being rewritten in Python 3. Rejoice!
