I think it would be a nice thing to have various terrain features (slope, not least) affect speed ever so slightly, so that choosing the optimal paths to flee and pursue would be more of a game.

This, plus no stamina regen in combat or in proximity of combat, so chases either succeed or fail in a reasonable timeframe rather than going on forever.

I always loved the stat Terrain Negotiation from Star Wars Galaxies... before they Order 66'd it. :(

There would be many problems with that i feel, and
would probably be rather clunky =o

If the systems are at all the same there will most
likely be clients made with auto aggro quite quickly.
Also the whole ranged weapons holding aggro if that's
still in (which could probably be cut out by Loftar, our
lord and savior). Those are the only two obvious downs
that i can think of...

Less apparent? perhaps if you accidentally wander past
a bear in the woods, you will most likely die before a
certain point in the game. Trolls : insta death.

If we were to approach the whole stamina thing... i
think the best method to go about that would most
likely be to limit the amount of water that can be
carried in some manner more reasonable. Perhaps if
drinking water needed to be treated in order to be kept,
and that in turn can only be kept in certain containers?
If you could only take one or two, or only have as many
as some form of equip slot?

Can you imagine hearthlings boiling their water and
keeping it in airtight waterskins to avoid a risk of some
sort?

Perhaps that would be as equally tedious and annoying
as if you were to take away the ability to regain stamina
in combat... but i feel taking away stamina regen in
combat is just brutal and would kill a lotta fun =x

That's been the main idea for a while... but how do you
limit one's ability to run without butchering one's mobility
in general? not just restrict them from fleeing endlessly.

How about just not allowing people to recover their stamina while moving? It makes no sense that you can run endlessly just because you're carrying several buckets of water. If you can only recover your stamina by standing still and drinking (plus of course the other, slower methods), it would prevent endless chases while still allowing you to recover your stamina quickly when needed - you just can't do it while running away from something and it leaves you defenseless for a short moment.

remove stamina regen bonus from water quality (all water recovers stamina at the same rate) - even the playing field that way

Huh, the formatting looks fine on my screen, and it's perfectly legible. Maybe it's a matter of display settings.. Also, making an exponentially more annoying and infinitely less insightful post in response doesn't seem to be the best counter. Or any counter.

Back to the subject... I, uh, didn't realize that micromanaging buckets and waterskins was part of endurance running. Yeah, that's a problem. Drinking while running isn't just absurd, it also has a really bizzare metagame, and makes clicking on waterskins more important during a long chase than managing pace and avoiding hazards.
