No client can display no tiles or objects until your server haven't sent them. Mechanics like "shadow of war" would be good enough - you can "see" persistent objects and tiles, if you have seen them in current session, but they should not be updated until you're close enough again.

It is actually called "fog of war" and I've always enjoyed games that utilize it

Some of the sounds are really annoying like the metalic screeching while cooking a rat, but I like all the other ones.
I think I'll miss boats being motor-propelled though
