Planned downtime: Hard drive replacement

Postby loftar » Tue Aug 11, 2015 8:57 pm

As recently mentioned, the server has suffered another hard drive crash, which I am not going to have replaced. I have scheduled with Hetzner to have the drive replaced at 22:30 UTC; that is, in about 2½ hours. The whole server needs to be shut down during the procedure, so the website will also be down around that time.

If all goes well, it should be up again shortly after the drive is replaced, but things like these aren't seldom accompanied by unexpected trouble, so I can't say anything too sure.

Hetzner didn't have anyone available at 22:00 UTC, so the replacement is postponed until 22:30 UTC. Updated OP.

Props to the Hetzner guy at Nuernberg RZ for doing it that late (early) time of day!

I'm shutting the server down now since I want to back some stuff up and have a bit of a margin.

As a matter of curiosity; What kind of drives are you guys using? What kind of RAID setup? What kind of RAID card? I'm building some arrays at work (And soon at home), so it's interesting to look into.

It's just standard hard drives with software RAID.
