They're killing chickens for their meat to turn into fat cuts and rendered fat which is an ingredient in making soap, which heals the sores.

Do not wander into a swamp while you have open wounds. As simple as that.
Use healthy alt to gather leeches to be applied on main. Just take them off before they start sucking blood.

And yeah, RIP chicken. It takes 27 of them to make a bar of soap.

Look at it this way: Infected sores are a means of healing wounds you otherwise take a lot of time waiting on healing items to cure.

Finally got mine cleared up. As someone who's only played in W10, I learned a valuable lesson: if you get knocked five times in one night, don't go looking for cadberries until your wounds are fully treated.
