Preferred Method of Fishing?

Right now my fishing setup is as follows:

A boat, with 2 crates. One is empty, and in the other I have a string, bone hook and a lure (these are spares in case one breaks). In my inventory is a waterflask and my key. I dig up lots of earthworms in forest terrain next to the river, dropping soil and drinking to from the flask to keep my stamina up. I then fish with the earthworms.

Is there any way this could be improved upon? Is there any way of getting more earthworms per soil - at the moment my earthworm:soil ratio seems about 1:15.

I'm a new player (few days) but I just joined a village, I'm thinking of "specialising" in fishing/cooking, is this reasonable? Any advice on getting fish quality up?

The fish quality is dependant on the fishing spot, different spots have different qualities. It is however softcapped by the quality of the fishing equipment you're using. So even at a Q50 fishing spot you won't catch Q50 fish with a Q10 fishing pole. Every part of the pole matter and sums up to the final quality. Wiki says the formula is (qPole*qLine*qHook*qLureOrBait)^(1/4).

There is no way to get more earthworms per soil, but you're digging faster (use up less stamina) if you have a shovel equipped.

Or, if you're tired of digging for worms, you could use leeches instead. Just stand in a marsh and watch your equipment window. As soon as you see a leech there, grab it and place it in your inventory.

Or you could use lures instead.

Great, ok. Is earthworm quality determined by soil? Is it softcapped by anything? Wiki doesn't say.

I prefer to use bait than lures, the best lure I can make is the block of wood + feather one, and it seems very very slow at catching fish.

Earthworms get LP as you dig for them and drain lots of stamina -> good for hunger, right?

yes, worms are effected by soil Q. worms and lures have there own benifits as well. worms are one use, but a fish will bite on very quickly. lures have infinite uses (as long as nothing breaks) but they take awhile to get a bite. find what works for you. personally, i like the woodfish and rocklobster lures for my fishing.

Well I might give woodfish a go, what's the difference between primitive lures and advanced ones? e.g woodfish to gold spoon lure?

Also guys, are there any fishing spots that can be fished without a boat? It's a pain hauling the boat to the river every time I want to fish.

Also, if so, do you catch different fish from the shore/boat?

you can actually fish from the river if you click in just the right spot... you can also sometimes find fish in lake shallows, so of course you can stand there and fish. the two different locations that matter are shallow water and deep water. you generally are not able to cast your line into the first tile of shallow water by rivers.

Ok. I'm going to get a full inventory of earthworms, fill 4 crates with earthworms, load them onto my cart, and have a big fishing expedition

Yeah, I'm not up to farming/animals etc yet. Just got my little hermit hut and waiting for my WWS to dry..

No, but thankfully my mentor/village owner might have one for me.

Why use a shovel though? More lost stamina -> more water -> more hunger -> more food -> more FEP consumed
