New (potential) player!

Postby jasonresno » Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:44 am

Hey guys,

I've been looking for a great sandbox mmo experience for the longest time. Typically I've been stuck on those higher end graphic based games but the style of this game drew me in. I've been lurking the forums for a little bit to get the feel of the game and if it's how it reads... I'm really excited. Basically what I've gathered from reading is that: This is a completely player run game in that the terrain, stories, conflicts, and success and failures are determined by the players. Is that about right? The prospect of starting with nothing and having to band together or become completely self sufficient so survive really appeals to me. My next assumption is that the whole world is "unsafe"? By that I mean: you are always at risk be it from animals or other players? Assuming that's true: is griefing a big deal here? Will I ever have time to level my newb or will I be ganked almost instantly? Final question: Does the actual game have an active community? The forum appears pretty active but you never know how that translates into the game.

Thanks ahead of time,

Jason.

Most people wouldn't want to leave 10,000 murders scents killing newbies for no reason.

You are never safe, but it is unlikely that someone will attack a "fresh" character. Griefing can be solved with this: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Ranging.
The game indeed has an active community, but the world is large, you won't find many people.

OK, that is comforting. Newb question again--and I apologize, I'm at work and can't invest myself into the wiki yet--what is so bad about leaving scents? Is it some sort of player penalty?

You can track scents and find the player who committed the crime, summon them, and kill them even if the player is offline.

Jason: Your initial assessment is far more accurate than the greater majority of guys starting up, you are on the right track. Read as much of the wiki as you can and keep in touch with the forums , it is where you will learn the most. Seach a thread with subject something like "How to protect your village" written by Avu, it is stickied. A lot of that might go over your head at first, but it will give you a really good push in the right dirction. Read all the stickies, combat is sophisticated, but you'll get the hang of it.

Welcome to the game and enjoy.

Thanks for the welcome, Sarge. I've got the Wiki open in one page, the forum in another, and the game in a third haha. This game is definitely intimidating. So far I'm setting up a lean-to and bed and trying to accumulate LP to skill up a bit. I haven't run into a single person so far and I didn't get to choose what world I went into at startup. Is there a way to find this out and is it usually pretty quiet in-game?

Again thank you guys so much.

I might get flamed or something for saying this, but a good way to generate LP seems to be to build cabins. It's worked for me, anyway, and it's much more legit than grinding buckets (so sayeth the forum). Something I have yet to attempt.

And yeah, it's a bit intimidating at first, but once you start learning skills and basically tinkering, you'll realize it's honestly pretty simple.

I came into this with the exact same mindset as you so I hope you do well. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip Canaris. What's wrong with building Cabins to get LP?

You'll have to clearcut a bit of forest, and some people will outright murder you for it.
