The little critters seem rather fond of stealing wooden footwear.
I wonder what they use them for..

Hey, even boars can get thorns in their feet...

They don't steal them. They are an armor and deflect damage up to a certain amount and are then destroyed.

The bacteria population living in ants stomach produces enzymes that allow digestation of cellulose.
In H&H world, ants in turn live inside boars and bears.
Thus all animals share the ability to use wood as food.
