Drowning deaths and compensation

Postby Ford » Tue Sep 08, 2009 1:30 am

One of my friends died swimming and lost his main character. There was no warning ingame, so saying you aren't at least partially responsible is bullshit. Him and the other people like him who got insta-killed by this bug put 100's of hours into this game trusting that they wouldn't randomly lose it like this; saying you aren't going to do anything about it is a complete betrayal of this trust. Me and the others affected either directly or indirectly certainly think it's worth your time and effort. I accept that you can't recover characters but why couldn't you give people LP on new characters equivalent to what they lost? Even if it's on a case by case basis done by PM or email and takes a long time wouldn't it be worth it? Don't you care more about the people investing huge amounts of time into your game than to making new features? Right now you're totally fucking them over.

tl;dr, know what it's about. They gave plenty of warning. Even the skill has a warning. Tell your friend to stop being an idiot and learn to read the dev posts.

Not everyone reads the forum. It's understandable that he didn't read the description, as most skill descriptions have been either blank, placeholders, or irrelevant prose until now. I think I just wikied most skills after I realized they never had anything useful to say. Regardless it's pretty irresponsible to put bombs around with little notes attached to them saying if you touch it it will blow up. If they had time to say in the description that it would insta-kill you if you used it why the hell didn't they just disable it? Besides there's no reason the dev's can't help even if they don't want to take the blame. You're the idiot if you think it's so obvious when so many people who aren't newbies were victims of it. I bet your opinion would be a lot different if it had happened to you.

I've seen three announcements, description and forum topics. And i drowned..
While walking through laggy forest I was blinded by 'loading' screen and my character walked into a river (I couldn't see it on the map cause the map was half-blank). Is that my fault too? I don't shout for recompensation, I just point out that it is somewhat idiotic..

No sympathy for people who just want to "try it out" or otherwise get in the water for any reason; anyone who managed to miss in-game announcements, dev posts long before deep water even existed and the skill description itself probably deserved what they got.

Some of these lag-based deaths (one of my good friends drowned before his computer even loaded the screen) ARE worth a little sympathy, but those people shouldn't have bought swimming in the first place. Even if we rule that out, it's still an alpha and bad things ARE going to happen to people that don't deserve it.
