Village socio-economic systems

Postby Sitting_Bill » Fri Jun 03, 2011 3:24 pm

Hi,

I've seen various posts in Dwarves and Thieves claiming that a village is "communist", and in game someone has told me that their village is "basically capitalist". I was wondering if you guys would care to post

(1) How the political system in your village works:
- Is there a Supreme Leader? Or are decisions made collectively?
- What level of obedience is required from villagers?

(2) How the economic system in your village works:
- Barter economy?
- Internal "points"/money system?
- Gift economy?
- Collective ownership?

(3) Whether you consider your village to be following a certain political or economic philosophy.

(4) Number of people in your village.

I hope this will be interesting for people who, like me, are somewhat interested in political/economic philosophy in the real world. It seems to me that H&H is a pretty good place to try out a lot of ideas, for example pure anarcho-communism or pure free-market capitalism (which have more similarities than either side would like to admit probably ;)).

The questions I've put are really just rough ideas, feel free to discuss whatever pops into your head.

The only village I've been part of so far has:

(1) Had a Supreme Leader, who pretty much let us do what we wanted apart from when I wanted to counter-raid a village that stole from us...
(2) Gift economy,
(3) No, noone else apart from me was interested in these things,
(4) 8, dropping to 2-3 after we got raided repeatedly by Taar.

However the village was not very successful due to inactivity, so its not a great example to be starting off with perhaps...

Thanks a lot for your help,

Gunnar

well, my village is a ruled by a council of elders, so to speak. economically, it is a meritocracy & barter system. i don't know that we really follow any particular ideal, we just try to do what works in the game. real life philosophies don't necessarily apply. number of people in our group has fluctuated greatly between a dozen and four dozen.

Communism would work with a smaller group of trustful people, but not with a bigger one. Problem is the q-race here.

Best thing is a mix from both, communism and capitalism, which means that everyone focus on something (like smith, metal digger, silk, trees) and gives their stuff out for free. But everyone is doing his own food, except for some unique positions like sewer. And with shared alts, like carpentry and survival. And always focus on bigger village targets, so everyone is busy.

Hmm that seems like a very efficient system. But doesn't it just end up that noone really has a "main", and the only characters that really develop a lot are combat ones? I guess this is probably the "most efficient" way, in that if one character gets taken out the whole village doesn't collapse.

Cheers

We have a Glorious Leader that filters the will of the People and, after careful deliberation, delivers it back to them in the form of long and short term directives. The level of obedience should be implicit considering that the source is also the destination.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. The smoothness of the system is overseen by a small "vanguard party" to protect against an inevitable decline into a psuedo-capitalism brought about by the inherent power of certain jobs and personalities.

Maoism is probably the closest. We have quite a few politically minded villagers, so it's fun to play around with it and see how to works.

Maybe 60% of recruits survive the work camps to be accepted into The People's Republic. To give exact numbers would be tacky.

Our pleasure.

Absolute Monarchy.
I, and the people who I trust control the Resources.
You have to work for the vilage, because the vilage protect and give you the tools
Those who goes against me, receive warnings, if they ignore it....
Of course I had fear of an revolt, with massive grief of my place, having the stronger on your side helps against that

Is that a fact? Well, you're a goddamn Philistine!
