I think the flash vid describes it pretty well. To go a bit more in-depth, there must be a destabilization of the global powers. Everyone starts fighting everyone else and the people wanting to be left alone get caught in the middle. Finally, the powers that have their fingers on the button decide "F*** this shit!" and nuke it all. We then begin again when the gods decide to recreate life yet again.
