Fort Design Discussion

Postby Frankenstein » Sun Aug 07, 2011 12:19 pm

Seeing as the server is down and I know there's a few nerds out there neurotically preening over it - I figure'd I'd throw this up.

What sorts of fort designs are you guys partial to?

I noticed that a lot of forts seem to use a 2-3 chambered wall layout with one wall super far out, and then an inner citadel, and sometimes a keep at the center. Is there a mechanical reason for this reoccurring theme? Or is it just that it's easy and efficient to construct?

Also, I've often thought it could be an entertaining experience to build a village that is very very long with like... A 10 tile wide road going down the center with gates at each ends. I don't know how viable that layout would be in the long run, though. While it seems fun to build and use - I don't know that it would be very safe.

A double curtain wall that will consume amounts of bricks beyond imagination and keep the farmers safe from corrupt bourgeoisie arrows that seek only true socialist comrades.

I've seen brick walls that seem like they go on for miles. My noobish mind is blown every time.

When I'm working on planning and building my forts - I actually find myself referring back to my experiences playing Dwarf Fortress. At a fundamental level they feel like they're pretty parallel to each other. In fact I've even used Dwarf Fortress as a utility tool to plot out building plans for parts of my fort - which oddly enough works very well at that.

I usually like to have my villagers build there own little settlements around the village idol, not connected in anyway so that each person can only be raided one at a time giving the others time to stash valuables on alt vaults, escape, or fortify.

i keep seeing brick wall perimeter with palisade outside it, seems a bit pointless really, the gap between brick and palisade is 2 tiles, but if they are there to knock down the brick wall , a crappy palisade isnt going to stop them, i dont rly get it

i find villages with lots of personal claims and personal brick walls on the inside to be a good defence, cuz they gotta roll the Ram in and knock down each persons wall to get any loot

I've heard that if you do a Citadel wall containing your actual village - then a far distant perimeter wall (brick being the best choice) with a 22 tile wide buffer zone it makes it incredibly difficult for raiders to bug jump the wall.

I've also heard that it stops them from using ranged attacks on residents since 22 tiles is the max for ranged attacks.

I always thought that was a useful bit of information to possess - if it's accurate, that is.

In my own experience I have put up a quick wooden palisade as a temp measure so I'm a little more secure when I build my brick wall. Bricks walls take a long time so a little security for that time gos a long way.

What would be the best wall strategy for a hermit with a village claim? Guess a double brick wall with CS leading out would be best to discourage would be raiders looking for soft targets.
How effective is a single brick wall?

It's only as effective as your sense of security. If you do not check for rams daily or you have an unsecured minehole, that brickwall will not do you any good. It is essentially the basic defense that cannot be penetrated by bashing but far from being invulnerable.
