Custom client impact on haven

Postby Howlingnorth » Wed Sep 07, 2011 6:43 am

Ive been playing haven for a long time and as you know any haven and hearth player worth his salt will use a custom client such as Enders or Arksu, but in my opinion I think the game was better off when there was no X-ray or nightvision. I miss the days when you went into a cave and you needed a torch, when you could hide behind trees and none would see you, and when the day cycles mattered, i think these were all essential game mechanics. Am i the only one who would prefer the game to work only with the normal client?

Let us remind ourselves of his bravery and willingness to fight for the safety of his friends!

Well, it just makes us all unable to do pretty much anything at night when the moons' entirely gone, for example.

That would suck.

Night-vision seriously and unfairly devalues metal but the 'x-ray' vision could be justified -- it doesn't make much sense for a boar or some other player to have the ability to hide 'behind' a tree when your character is on the same side of it as them. In a case of x-ray vision being incorporated into the default client rather than a line-of-sight dynamic maybe there could be a "hide in tree/brush" which has a timer to preform getting in and out of hiding and the speed of that timer depends on your stealth*agility; maybe still, different trees and land type brushes would have their own modifiers towards that timer. Regardless of any complaint or critique, it only makes sense (unless you're a spoiled, self-centered troll) to have a completely level playing field for the best gaming experience and forcing everybody to use a normal client (current one has too many shortcomings and downfalls) would obviously do that.

Well it is a game mechanic or was. Day is meant to be bright and night is meant to be dark , just as jorb and loftar intended it to be.

That doesn't make it a good game mechanic. You should ask yourself (or the devs should) why people felt the need to bring in nightvision in the first place. This discussion we had a lot of times already though. Only recently Jackard linked some thoughts form the Inner Party forum on how to improve the whole lighting situation. By making fires, cndelabras etc last forever/very long, by introducing more passive light sources like will o' wisps and of course also by making night less dark and more a matter of different colours rather than hiding things from players. That is just plain annoying.

The vanilla client can set much, much better ambience...occasionally. Mostly it is just an inconvenience though.

I think nightvision, X-ray, hide objects and zoom are there to make the game easier. I can't think of one thing the custom clients can't do. You even have an option that shows your path when you click. You can't possibly say this was brought in because the devs mechanic is a bad one if the client has everything that could possibly make the game easier.

Well the first custom clients was adding features that should have been present within a normal game from seeing things behind the sprite of an object to being able to see more than just a handful of tiles away via the small client window to multiple hotkey bars. It became more advanced, and added features such as visible grid, boar/bear red circle, and afterimage of scent direction. Some features such as automated scripts, seeing the enemy's IP, detecting objects on the minimap, and detecting people labeled as enemies (red) from a long distance may borderline cheating though your mileage may vary.

A ring of candle is a lovely sight with nightvision off.
