Why do you play H&H?

Postby Phenolatukas » Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:32 am

After a while of playing, I'm begining to wonder exactly what the attraction of playing this game is, when the usual outcome so far is for the passer by to decide to swear at you, steal your items, run away with a boat or some other object, and for no reason. Despite claiming plots, building walls, this still happens and since I'm not an immortal being I can't stay playing 24/7 either, resulting in burgalrys in the night.

Sure, nothing of real worth was stolen and I'm not gonna complain, but I'm more intrested to know what keeps people playing a game where fuck you and burgalry has become some kind of greeting? Just intrested, is all.

You got robbed even though you had a wall built? Unlikely.

Well, you carve out your own goals. I desperately wanted to erect a small village and become a trade hub in my region in w3. I did this and I was content. In w4 I just wanted to be a hermit selling high quality dried hemp and cheap wine by the bucket -- I failed at this twice when I was roped into joining a village and later into starting a village. It was still fun but not nearly the same!

If your goal is to meet nice neighbors and be secure then you'll have to work at it like any other goal. You just need to either influence your region and forcefully discourage undesirables (Raiders, assholes, thieves) while encouraging desirable neighbors (Trade, ranging, and trust) and you'll get your wish. In Haven and Hearth you're given nothing and must work for everything. Ideally, with enough labor and effort you can bring your dreams to life.

we have had issues.
day 1.
* asshole destroyed all our crates for no reason and walked off beforewe had aenough for yeomanry
* boat stolen by snakkey with fish inside

solution: cave, hearth wall till yeomanry was set

day 2.

set palisade post, didnt have enough people with yeomanry to claim said spot went to bed, woke up to find someone stole stuff that was majorly important that was unclaimed and sealed our post.

solution: claimed post, and set two new ones

since wall, been ok

someone did also shoot at our fishing alt for no reason
and various other stuff.

part of the game is survival/ and how well you do it will determine how long you last in this game.

World 4 I just wanted to learn to play. World 5 i wanted to become a Pali Basher and did. World 6, I want to successful lead my town and make a Qual 200 Cutthroat Cuirass. This game is a sandbox, you decide what fun you want to have.

It's unfortunate your neighbors have been causing so many setbacks for you, Phenolatukas. :(

If someone steals from a claimed plot they leave evidence in the form of a scent. Scents can be used to find the thief's home and get revenge. As for walls, they can indeed be broken, but keep in mind rams require 24hrs to set, so you don't need to be an immortal being to prevent nighttime burglaries. While I get your point that nowhere is safe, the key is to make yourself an unattractive target. You can't be untouchable but it is within your power to make it expensive, time consuming, and risky for someone to attack your settlement.

You ask where the fun can be. Some people enjoy 'fighting crime' and getting revenge. Some people enjoy destroying stuff and being a 'criminal' (why do you think Grand Theft Auto was a success?). Some people enjoy avenging/protecting newer players or hermits that get raided. Many people take pride in being able to thrive and overcome setbacks/challenges. If the game is not fun for you that's OK. Honestly, I think the average human would not find this game fun

It may make more sense to think of the thieves/raiders/assholes as part of the environment you're trying to survive in.
Kinda like a bear, but with a much better AI... and better loot when you defeat them ;)

I think of them as the Njerpez faction in Unreal World.
