No pain, that's where you're wrong.
In response to your original comment, its in elected officials best interests to care what the people think. You see, we live in a democracy. In democracies, we chose who gets put into office. If we don't like what someone is doing, we won't elect them.
But, you say, the leaders don't care what we think; they only care about corporate money. I would have to agree with you on that. Yet it begs the question: Why are our leaders so swayed by these private interests? To answer that question, you only have to switch on the tv, or go online, or talk to someone in the streets. You'll find that hardly anyone cares about whats going on in the world, let alone the nation. Its not "in." No, we are much too busy trying to get rich or famous.
Our culture has become based on greed. We have switched from a civic-minded society to one where the dollar is God. The same culture of greed we live in, is the same as our leaders live. Can you blame them for wanting to make a quick buck? Can you blame them for wanting to get ahead in life? So what if they have to pay off a few "friends" when they get to the top? They can't get elected without those billions of dollars, so it's a neccessary evil.
But, why do they need those billions of dollars? Surely its not a prerequisite to getting elected. Sadly, though, it is. So, we have to wonder: why do they need billions of dollars to get elected? Surely if their views are in line with the people's they will get the position. That is an honest misconception. You see in a country, like ours, where political apathy is so prevalent, people that hold our views never get seen. Why? We don't seek them out. We let the media and corporations pick them for us. We frankly don't give a damn. We are the most advanced country in the world, yet we have the lowest voter turn-out of any true democracy. A sad fact indeed.
So maybe it's time to stop blaming the government for all of our problems, and take a long cold look in the mirror. We can fix our own problem if we only try.
