Every layer the damage doubles.
Miner's helmets cuts it in half.

Jorb sent me to L6 before.. surrounded me with birds
and wolves... then hit me with 9001 cave ins at once...

Then revived me and told me it was just a dream...

i still can't figure out if it was though

I've seen 800-900 but, there were stories of level 5 cave-ins doing 1000+.
So, who knows.

I've taken 800 damage on lvl 1 actually. The way cave ins work is that each layer goes up in base damage (50,100,200,400,800) and then there's a random chance of how many "rocks" actually hit you (doesn't seem to be related to the number of boulders that fall though, which I find odd). As such, the *minimum* damage on L5 is 800. And, as I said, I was hit with 16x the base damage on level one.

Yeah... don't mine without supports below level 1. Safest rule I've come by with regards to mining.
