http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/ scroll to the bottom of the page.

To find people: find a river, build or find a boat and start boating around the neighborhood.

There used to be but it was removed from the game for some reason or another. You can check out the IRC channel though

also, be careful jock, some people will kill you on sight, some will give you free stuff, some will totally ignore you, if you see a village (large and red on your minimap), be super-careful they may treat you as a threat.
this is a dangerous world, and not to be taken lightly, but having said that, i have met some great people through trading (from my own village)
i used to send out a low LP alt to scan the area, you will soon know if a neighbour is friend or foe at no cost (i.e if you die, no problem)

(dwarves and thieves in forums is the place people look for village members (although probably a little late in this world for many new recruits, especially if you have low stats))
(apples for oranges is the trading thread, and you can meet many people through trading in-game, if you have set up your own personal village)

As in? If you want friends to start out where you're at, you can set a hearth secret in your buddies window (ctrl+b). Anyone can then spawn at your hearth fire with a new character that knows your hearth secret. Stick to the rules of passwords on this. Some people like to hack the system and spawn at random hearth fires.

If you plan on having friends join you, joining a village right away probably isn't the best idea as some places will accept one or two new players at a time, but not a whole herd of them.
