Your Thoughts on Working

Postby jordancoles » Sat May 19, 2012 2:58 pm

So I woke up at 6am today and got all prepared to go to my job early to finish what I was doing the day before when I was called half an hour before my shift asking me if I could drop the shift for the day. Due to hours being cut until the summer season etc etc everyone has been getting less hours and I only had 2 shifts this entire week in this one job so I'm pretty butt-mad about losing one out of my two shifts. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on how some places are run, or what experiences they've had with their workplace? Some things like being placed into a specific section where you're the only person, and then being asked to work everywhere but that section for the entire day only to be yelled at for not managing your area. Or being kept on passed a seasonal position only to be let-go 3 days later due to the company making less profits than expected. Oh, and best of all; working at a temp agency and having the person supervising not fill out your sheet that says you were there so the agency never pays you for a week's work. I've found other work but neither place apparently is able to fit my schedules together decently since they always seem to overlap. Anyone know of a stable career?

Inb4 stupid thread blahblah etc
Srs question.

Child care is a very stable industry to work in, the only thing is that it requires a hell of alot of patience, this is why many people do not last. Here in Australia, it is also not too bad earnings either. You have to have a good sense of humour and be prepared to sing alot and play games. ^___^

I don't know how different it is over there in comparison to here, but you need a job with a contract, that way they can't just mess you about - if you are only doing seasonal work then its pretty much the same over here.

I've found being the boss the best position to be in  but even that isn't 100% secure in todays economical climate.

As for the temp agency - you can't let them get away with that! The company you temped at will have a record of you being there, get in touch with them.

Care facilities are always crying out for workers, its a demanding job and ppl don't tend to stick at it, but if you have a caring nature and patience you could look into that.

Good luck anyway. :)

I'm aiming for police once i'm back in shape. Most places are constantly hiring for them and fire fighters. Might have to cut your hippie hair tho /wink

Yes, this was sort of a kick in the teeth. When I was fresh out of highschool I worked for a temp agency called Pivotal Staffing which then proceeded to jerk me around for weeks. I called and went in daily bitching about it and they basically just bumped me back and forth between people. They said they had no records because the asshat who was supervising didn't fill out my paperwork, and the dude was too proud to admit he made a mistake and simply claimed that I didn't work for him. So that was cool, I guess...

I'm actually looking into going back to school for social work, mostly therapy for people with mental disabilities. I did all of my volunteering in a childcare/teen pregnancy centre that is run by my aunt and it's something that I'm good at.

I work for myself at this moment in time, so working isn't bad at all, can be rather fun :) (Not going to disclose what I do). For you I'd recommend being self employed as well, look on eBay, see what sells and what doesn't and try to get more into that, who knows one day you could make enough to quit your job.

For me personally if/once I graduate I'll probably end up working for someone else for a while, so I think it ultimately depends on your job, your manager/seniors, hours you work and your co-workers. Most people working don't really enjoy there jobs and that's a key issue, you should work and do a job you enjoy as that motivates you to succeed, move up the career ladder, perform and carry out the task in hand using the most efficient and effective methods.

However in this current economic climate it is understable that people work jobs they do not like, feeding yourself is more important then working at a post you will enjoy. Anyways, my thoughts on work? It's a mixed view, if I am fortunate enough to get a job at a place of interest I think it's great, if I don't then I'll look for different career options.

I think the main thing is just what you said, finding something that you enjoy and that you actually want to put your efforts into. I believe that the smaller an operation you're involved in the more you'll want to contribute though. I worked at a little record store that was owned by 2 people and they were the only 2 workers aside from one other family member who worked from time to time to help out. When it's something where you can see the immediate effects of your work then I feel like you'd be more motivated to do the work to the best of your abilities while if you're working for a large chain of stores you don't feel like you're accomplishing much. At least that how I've felt about it.
