A Letter To Jorbtar

Postby jordancoles » Tue Sep 25, 2012 5:58 am

I wrote this weeks ago and simply never bothered to post it, but fuck it. Here's a brief summary of what's been going on for new people just joining in, and for the Devs to see. I don't see this changing anything but I feel like it highlights the problem quite well. I wasn't sure which section to put this under so a mod can feel free to move it.
------------------------------------------

Dear Jorbtar, if you've been reading the forums at all you should know of a few of the major flaws in the current mechanics of the game. The main issue being bug rams which you are well aware of I'm sure. The problem does not just stop there though. Because of the threat of these rams, people have been abusing more unintended mechanics in order to defend against them.

1. The Bug Ram.
Bug rams, or Burgingrams (as we ALL call them) are glitched rams that allow players to repair the ram while another person moves it allowing them to move the ram any distance that they would like so long as they're not blocked by something and forced to stop. This is a terrible abuse because it allows literally any faction to be leveled by a minimum of 2 people. A ram can be place 1000 tiles away providing the people have enough bone glue to roll it that far to your walls. There is absolutely no way to defend against this aside from an island vault and let's be honest, you can't have a faction on an island. It encourages vaults and not villages.

Some examples of where bug rams were used:

2. Unbreakable/Unliftable Objects.
By making banners and statues around their walls/houses/anything that they want to protect, players are effectively able to make a nuclear bomb shelter that is in no way penetrable without the owner's consent. AD, one of the larger factions has surrounded their entire village with statues so that it is completely protected from any assault by ramming. Because of this, they are running rampant, bug ramming anything they see fit. Another example which has been used since this ramming started was statuing a whole house by shift clicking making it 100% impossible for anything to get in aside from HF or one solitary CR inside. Other unbreakable objects such as dead bodies and personal claim stakes are used at times to stop rams from being used.

Some examples of unbreakable objects being used unfairly:
Personal claims abuse
1. In the beginning of the world people were using personal claims to make vaults out of houses. Image
2. They are used to block entrances so it would be impossible to get back. In this picture the personal claim cannot be seen, but it was there, so the people who entered inside of a cave got trapped. Also, notice the use of dead alt bodies that are impossible to move or get around.

Statue / Banner Abuse
1. They are used in a way which makes it impossible to break into vaults where criminals store their hearthfires. Therefore anyone who chooses to abuse burgrams are safe from retaliation.Image

Freshly Spawned Alt Abuse
Alts can be used to block characters in which have some experience on them in order to prevent them moving to kill them with archers, or to simply block the path of players bashing walls.

One small house circled by statues can be used to house a HF with 100% safety from outside threats and the people are free to burgram and destroy whole factions!

The Solution
The solutions to these problems are quite simple. By removing the hitbox for unbreakable objects such as statues, banners, claim stakes, and bodies, the problem of unrammable walls is also removed from the game. The reason why people are bug ramming is because they can't be rammed back!

Please sirs, fix these abuses so that we can live in our sea of lag in peace.
Signed, literally everyone who isn't AD.

Update:

New issues have risen since this post. People have been using mineholes to make unbreakable walls and bears are able to bash authority objects (including village idols) that have full authority. This in combination with the ram bug means that no one can have a decently sized village. We're now completely restricted to island vaults. By making it so that auth objects can not be place within 2 tiles of one another, and same with mineholes this problem will be removed. Removing bear bashing of auth objects will allow for village expansion yet again.

The OP of this thread gives an example of bear-bashing auth objects with full authority. Village idols can even be bashed with bears.

Update:
Cliff jumping:

Second, I want all of you to know how to abuse this feature. Because BUZZBOMB

So here's my little noob tutorial on how-to!
Let's get started.
First you want to look for a village that is built next to a cliff. I haven't found any, so here's a little example of a cliff a village might have been built on:
Image
Honestly, any cliff with corners should do.
Next, you should PAVE the corner so that YOU CAN SPRINT (my friends have confirmed that running sometimes does work, but it takes a little longer time to get used to). Grasslands work too because you can SPRINT on them.
Then, you locate a jumpable corner. Usually any corner is jumpable, and they often require different "spots" to find. Here is one:
Image
THEN, you come AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the corner pixel:
Image
THEN you activate SPRINT and you click AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE so that you character "twitches" a few times just to get past the cliff:

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask in this topic and/or on PM!

Summon Bug:
If you break your hf and someone opens up the force summon window, you can rebuild your HF and log off but they can still summon you as if you had no hf.
People have setup bots for this to always be checking scents incase you break your hf. Once you do, the bot holds the flower window open for you to test the summon later.

Solution: (11:11:40 PM) Colesie: 5-10 spaces needed between auth objects/mineholes, 2 between strong boxes. The ability to destroy or lift dead bodies, the ability to walk through p claim stakes and village idols, remove bear bashing, remove troll brickwall bashing, fix the "taming" animal AI where animals will follow you in peace mode without attacking forever, make rams only repairable once or not at all, make ridge hitboxes fuller without the small gap
(11:11:41 PM) Colesie: Bam
(11:11:46 PM) Colesie: Game fixed ty Jorbtar
(11:12:11 PM) Colesie: Also, a system check if the player has a HF or not when pressing the summon button

lol if you think they still give a fuck about this piece of trash or the people who continue to play it.

H&H is dead and will never ever be developed again. Deal with it. Move on.

What? When you fell on your keyboard Criminal Acts was toggled and then when you were picking yourself up you pushed your mouse onto the floor where your cat pounced on it and caused your guy to steal someone's cheese? That happens to me all the damn time.

This is the response I figured I'd get, and I basically agree with you. But just figured I'd post this since I took the effort to make it up. I like how it outlines the problems on the off chance that something is decided to ever be done about it.

Salem is experiencing some of the same issues and they're finally addressing them out of necessity. Hopefully we'll see a meaningful solution applied there and brought over here.

Of course id love to see this fixes added into the game, But do i think it will ever happen? Probably not. I feel as if loftar and jorb have given up on hnh. It makes me sad to say that such a good game is going to be probably shut down but it probably will.

Id rather have people hiding in statues then bugrams/impenetrable houses.

/e id also want (if they are going to fix it) The bug ram being fixed. Make repairing a ram take 12 hours and fix the forever moving ram shit.
