How do people buy into this?

My mother messaged me on facebook today saying I should take chlorine dioxide (which is literally bleach) to cure my asthma and allergies and sent me this link.
My mother is convinced that this will cure pretty much everything. I think this is a symptom of a larger issue, like how people do not trust doctors, and think they are just out to make money off them. When did doctors become less trustworthy than snake oil salesmen?
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

Chlorine Dioxide is used to bleach wood pulp and is toxic as hell, who in their right mind would ever consider using it as a miracle cure for anything?

Nobody that's who, shit will kill you.

your mother is obviously trying to kill you

If you want to cure your asthma, just pray. It's a proven cure for everything.

I don't think she's trying to kill me or anyone else, she's just confused. This stuff goes by "miracle mineral solution" "Master Mineral Solution" "MMS" and a bunch of other shady names, but the most common name is industrial strength bleach.

Well, there is one unusual cure for asthma, though I only have one data point for it.

Extensive exercise and workouts to boost strength and stamina can mitigate the worst of it. Theodore Roosevelt embarked on a fairly serious bodybuilding program when he was young, and it paid out quite well in terms of overall health.

This is a fun article to read on this topic: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/201 ... ris-mooney
It explores the science behind why we don't believe in science.

Chlorine Dioxide is just a mildly acidic water disinfectant. It's used to kill bacteria in water but it sure as heck isn't going to clear up your asthma. To my understanding there is no cure for asthma.

People prefer to believe people who sound confident and those who act as if they have all of the answers. Modern medical scientists and scientists explicitly state that they do not have all of the answers and are always looking for solutions and testing existing theories. This means that, to the average individual, a snake oil salesman sounds more trustworthy than a scientist or doctor. We've come to misunderstand science, medicine, and generally complicated things often due to fundamental flaws in our learning as children and during our education. To anyone denying this, just think of the growing movement against vaccination across the bible belt in the US, the fear of food with chemicals in it all across the US, the desperate need to eat gluten free food in yuppy populations, and the idea that bottled water is any cleaner or superior to tap water. These movements aren't based in science or rational thought yet people cling to them desperately often due to cults of personality, fear mongering, or highly effective advertisement.

Now that that's out of the way, I'm not sure why you linked to an autism video? It's a bit of a non sequitur.

One thing
I am one of the only people in my year who knows what they are talking about
Everyone else thinks that if something about a science story is in the news then it is true

A kid a while back tried to get a petition passed to ban "Dihydrogen Monoxide" for a science fair, with some strange facts to back it up that were all technically true. For those of you who don't know, that's the name for the chemical formula H2O, or water, but it sounded scary and science-y, and so the petition got singed thousands of times.

It just goes to show that if you seem official and like you know what you're talking about, people who are uninformed on the topic are more likely to believe you. If you look it up, there are tons of people who do pranks akin to "Dress up like a news reporter and ask them bonkers questions and misinform them," and it seems to work since the guy has a fancy suit and a microphone.
