Is this another "grind your way to victory" game?

Hi. I have been playing this game for a couple of days, and I have a few things to say about it.

First of all, I have read two comprehensive guides as well as a few basic articles on the Wiki, so I don't think I am speaking from a position of complete ignorance.

So one thing I've noticed in my playthrough so far is that this game is based on XP (LP). Virtually everything requires this. But it seems that aside from the initial few hundred or thousand XP you get from discoveries, XP is very difficult to gain. From my understanding, you need to "study" various objects to gain XP, each of which takes at least a third of an hour in real life to study, for a paltry gain of perhaps less than 100 XP. This is unfortunate, because you need at least several hundred (or in many cases several thousands) XP to be able to do anything with it. I often find myself roaming the map with nothing to do for hours until I finish studying enough objects to level up or research new skills to be able to actually do anything new. I truly wish this game was more playing and less waiting.

Other than that, I have three minor issues with the game:

There is no "what's this?" option in the game. I would like an in-game wiki or at least a basic description of every item to learn what it is and what it does. I have several toads in my inventory for example and I have no clue what to do with them. It would be nice if I didn't have to pause, open an internet browser and go to the Wiki or forum just to learn what an item is for.

Also, I think it's frustrating how the character keeps bumping into imaginary walls and become unable to move simply because a little basket or another object is in the way.

And I would also appreciate it if this game included atmospheric music, or any music.

Why the rush bud?

You could stop to read about toads on the wiki while your curios finish studying.

Then hit the forums and find some suggested music from the community.

Or open another client to play the log in music until the hypnosis kicks in and all your opinions melt away.

1. there is a in-game wiki on the ender client
2. bumping into things is part of any game if you could walk though stuff then that would make no sence
3. there is music you can play by using commands
example: :bgm -l sfx/music/travel

Edit: If you want better curios and LP gain then you need more Exp. and Perc.

Yes, this is a grind your way to victory game. First you establish your location, setup your home or stick to a nomadic lifestyle. Then you develop a consistent source of food and lp. Exploration, both the skill and actually, is key to survival early on. You need to find a good, safe home if you want to thrive in this game. Plopping down anywhere is throwing your fate to luck.

Once you're established you build your character through farming/hunting/herding/fishing/foraging/whatever and develop, or don't, links to the community in the area. It's always great to find friendly neighbors, trade partners, and other people to live with. These people can rescue you if you're in danger, trade you goods that are invaluable to you in exchange for simple things (often in bulk), or just make your play period more fun.

Location is everything to reducing grind. A good spot means a wide variety of curiosities within a short distance. This will rapidly amplify your lp gain per hour from a few hundred to tens of thousands. Eventually, once you've settled in and you've figured out a method that works for you, you'll probably be bringing in about a million lp every day or two. Try to find a location within walking distance to multiple biomes that isn't too close to a river network. Mudflats, swamps, and mountains are great sources for curiosity variety, since you can only study 1 of each type of curiosity at a time.

Build your intelligence so that you can study more things concurrently. Ideally you want your study window entirely full at all times.

How long would it take until the game reaches "fun" levels? Because right now I have "discovered" everything near me and built everything I could build. I am still at a low level that I'm afraid the majority of the game is not yet available to me. At this rate, it will probably take at least a couple of dozen of hours of playtime until I've leveled up to a point that I can actually do a lot in this game. What are the quickest ways of gaining LP for someone who has been playing the game for only a few hours?

1. get more perc. and exp.
2. look for curios
3. study
4. buy skills
5. build a fort
6. eat to become stronger and get more int.
7. get more survival for higher Q items
8. make better tools and items
9. go mine something
10. be a raider or become a helpful person

that basicly sums it up.

Edit: And yes it takes a while to study and make a fort.

takes me only 3 real days to get a palisade up, without the drying timer.

I'm going to be entirely honest with you, you've probably spent a lot of your discovery lp in areas that do not benefit you very much right now. Everything has slowed down to a grind because you completely lack resources in your environment and you lack the ability to acquire better resources. Runestones, pavements, and wicker baskets do not bring bread to the table nor do they provide curiosities to study.

First things first I'd suggest saving up enough lp to learn hunting. You'll do this best by leaving your current area and finding a novel one with more resources to discover. Also, open up your belief slider and move the slider that says Martial/Peace towards Peace. Every bump along the way will boost your lp gains by ~52% (varying by level) until you reach a total of 360% lp gains. Yes, the belief slider is limited by time, everyone hates it, it will not survive to future versions, but it's here now so we work with it. Once you have hunting you can begin to gather rabbits and ants. Rabbits provide good early food and your first source of hides and leather -- these are vital. Ants are decent food and excellent curiosities. An Ant Empress alone is worth 2000 lp base, which can be substantially amplified by the quality of the environment. Even if you only find a quality 10 ant empress, once you put that through the multiplier that's a pretty decent 7200 lp chunk to get from a little bit of walking around.

What you can build is incredibly limited right now. Options do not open up until you've discovered the base materials. By picking up frogs, you've unlocked future recipes that require frogs such as the Enthroned Toad curiosity, which gives 4000 base lp, but you'll need to find some other components for that first such as a royal toadstool and a frog's crown. You've probably discovered logs, stones, branches, and other common items in a forest, expand your horizons to get access to more and more useful things.

After you have hunting and you've managed to feed yourself I'd suggest picking up fishing to establish a stable food source. Meanwhile, put as many points into Exploration and Survival as you can. Worry about the niceties of everything else later, exploration and survival will help you survive in the wild until you have the means to settle down.

Don't unlock new skills as soon as you can, unless you're going to use them immediately. Instead put points into exploration, because that lets you find better foragable curios, and survival because it caps quality of the stuff you forage. Do get fishing, though, because fish is a great source of intelligence, and intelligence caps how much stuff you can study at a time.

Can you explain how I can increase my perception, and how food affects stats, and how I can regain my health?

Here is where I am at now:

Base attributes are all 10 except for Agility which is 11.

Skill values:

UC 4
MC 1
Marksmanship 1
Exploration 4
Stealth 2
Sewing 1
Smithing 1
Carpentry 2
Cooking 1
Farming 1
Survival 1

Skills:

Carpentry
Foraging
Fishing
Hunting
Lumberjacking
Oral Tradition
Primitive Tools
Stone Working
Will to Power
UnarmedCombat
Wilderness Survival

I have not found any rabbits yet. I have come across a few animals, but I have no idea how the combat system works, and I seem to miss every time I punch.
