I believe Xcom has discussed this location in detail before. Essentially sheep and rams were released into the wild. Everyone sort of expected them to die. Instead they have thrived and sort of just eaten through the region.

That's pretty awesome, I did see a few dead ones while walking, some skeletons so I guess the food is running out.

I find it interesting that it's mostly rams left. This makes sense of course. Females that get pregnant start to eat more food and so they starve to death faster.

all domestic animals, that is, pigs, sheep, cows and chickens on your farm need you to feed them.
bears and boars need to eat too, but they eat new players

Cows and Sheep temporarily turn grass into barren land if they eat the grass instead of feed. The grass will eventually grow back on its own.
