Some Perspective

Postby Agarrett » Tue Dec 15, 2009 12:55 am

Recently I wondered how large the game world really was, so I decided to find out. I took the idea that the entire game world is 5x5 super grids and I did some calculations and made a map. So we all know that it takes quite some time to go across 1 super grid. This just goes to show how long it would really take to get across the entire game world.

Next map, lets have one 4x this size and with continents and oceans. That would be awesome. At the beginning there would only be one continent inhabited, and eventually explorers would travel out in massive ships to new lands, not knowing if they will ever see land again at all, for they may all starve. Then as you travel into the crow nest and you can see 3x more around you then you can on deck, you spot land, and you know that you are the first one to ever set foot there...

Thanks to Sever for the map.

It may have been easier to understand if he'd put grid lines or corners on it but basically, that bit of colour in the middle is the map that the current world started with.

Since then Loftar has added a ring of maps around it (tiles) if you want to see what it looked like then, you can do some work in mspaint.

Since that first ring Loftar has AGAIN added a SECOND ring around, so that now there are 5 rings from left to right and two rings from top to bottom.

The image looks accurate enough to me.

For further clarity:

None of the other maps are publicly released, by devs or cartographers.

Edit: Also, the world is huge already. And I do mean massive. Enormous. It only seems small when you view it as one big map. Making it 4 times bigger would be interesting but ridiculous. The map is already 25 times larger than the old map, and no one has mapped and released another supergrid map. A continent map would be nice; I think any smallness of the current map is due to a lack of interesting features.

To think I thought it was too long of a walk to go from my claim to the village idol. LOL. The map is gigantic, way more than I thought it was.

It seems like the world is rather large because of rivers and dangerous animals. Both of those did not exist on the old map. On the other hand, you can fast travel to villages that other people have settled already, which shrinks the world. I know anytime I'm walking just to get somewhere, it feels like it takes forever.

I think maps are 5000 tiles wide, and each tile is a meter. That makes the world 25 km (15.5 mi) wide.

Edit: Old tile was grass, too. You could run on it for a long time.

So, I think we should have the next supergrid layer turn to ocean halfway through, with small randomly generated islands, that have diamonds and new fish, and all sorts of goodies.*
