Why are online games serious?

Postby Caradon » Sun Jan 24, 2010 9:01 pm

lulz srsn bsns.

Words out of the mouths of the mentally weak, the socially inept, the intellectually diminished. Those without respect for others.

What is an online community really, and how does it compare to night clubs, bars, diners, or other social hangouts in the real world?

The answer is that they compare with each other equally. One is no better no worse, and no less real than the other. Aside from how we can deal with people who would seek to cause trouble.

People hide behind the anonymity of the internet and act without inhibition, they justify their actions as though they are harming nobody, when in truth they are violating them in ways that cannot be done physically. Our society is far too complacent in how things work, people see these events and shrug, "It's the way of the world" they say.

I disagree.

Let's put it in a standard that many know very well.. Reality.. what is real? What is taken seriously? Religion.. why, that's most certainly fake, many great lies that people have killed over, never having interacted in any significant measurable way.. and yet people are somehow justified to feel strongly about it.

Alternatively, Internet communities.. While constructed from digital information and interpreted by computer software it is quite real, events and objects can be interacted with by many people and viewed by all. All in a significantly measurable way. Yet somehow, people are supposedly not justified to feel strongly about it.

I wonder, why is it religion is protected when it is measurably fake, when internet communities are not actively protected, despite being measurably real?

What brain defect must you have to have fun at anothers expense, be consciously aware of anothers suffering yet continue doing it?

In other facets of society that is known as criminal insanity.

I would argue that how someone behaves on the internet is how they would behave in the real world if most potential consequences fell away.

So it is very fair to judge a person based on how they behave online when they are at their worst. That is their true selves.

BS. People play roles (according to Erving Goffman we even do it all the time, not only when consciously planning to) and they are able to to switch their costumes. Some are able to play a big diversity of characters, some just stay in their role of an idiot, because their mind isn't able to suggest them other parts in the play.

No, burg, what you jackasses are doing is not playing a role, You are just fucking shit up for people. Your sole purpose in playing this game is to destroy what anyone else works on and build your own society up. That's total horse shit.

It's true, how you act online really shows your true self. Such as "are willing to commit a crime (in most developed countries) because some mean dudes pissed on your Wheaties".

So if all potential consequences fell away, you would behave like a retard in the "real world" too?
