Bottleneck Lawspeaker poll

Postby Öx » Sun Jun 21, 2009 6:18 am

Okay, some of us Bottleneck citizens want to figure out this Lawspeaker and Chieftain stuff.

So, Bottleneckers, if you want to run for office, reply in this thread. If your forum name and character name are different, please give your character name as well.

I suggest also giving some reasons why us citizens should vote for you. Make a speech!

I expect to officially open the polls in around 24 hours, and close the polls in perhaps 72 hours. Vote now if you wish, early votes will be counted.

If you run for office, I will also consider you as voting for yourself unless you specify otherwise.

I am not currently planning to do hidden ballots by personal message, but I could be talked into it.

P.S. To avoid semblance of taint, I will not be running for either office.

EDIT: Clarification: We are indeed voting for both Lawspeaker and Chieftan now. You may run for both. However you may not hold both offices simultaneously. If you win both offices, you may choose which you want to hold.

EDIT: Candidates should remember that the Lawspeaker skill costs 20,000 LP.

EDIT: I think it's fair to cast an empty ballot, meaning that you don't wish to support anybody who's running, or that you don't want anybody at all in these positions.

Currently declared candidates for Lawspeaker:
  • WorkerDrone
  • Goran Starodub (DJ as alt character; Potjeh in the forums)

Currently declared candidates for Chieftain:
  • Owen Quillion (KoE in the forums) WITHDRAWN
  • Hamel
  • Adam-
  • theTrav

If we should be electing ourselves the Village Chieftain as well, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for that. If we're only electing Lawspeakers, I think I'll bow out as I already know someone who would likely do a better job. I'll make my argument for it at a later date, as these things are best slept on.

My in-game name is Owen Quillion.

I, WorkerDrone, of sound heart and mind, do so declare my candidatecy. I believe that with my active and contributive attitude towards the situation in Bottleneck, along with a good head for mediating cases such as theft and of course fights, I can make sure our community's Justice System remains fair and involved with the people. If you have something to say about the crime, even if your the suspect your self, I will listen. If I believe that the situation needs to be defused, I'll come right out and say it. And when justice needs to be distributed, I'm the person to trust with the hammer.

I swear upon my life, my blood, my axe, my mind, spirit, and soul to pledge my undying loyalty to the Dwarven folk of Bottleneck. Power is away from my grasp, however, with Justice in hand, I will strike the tainted earth of criminal intent and clear the innocent of accusation.

To my opponents, who are indeed equally qualified for the place of Lawmaker, I contribute as much if not more then them. I help people with material obtaining, whether it be metal or leather, whatever they need, if not immediately, then soon. People can already attest to that. If community tools and supplies are low, I will do my part in the mundane and complete the tasks that still need doing, whether it be leather making, food processing, you name it. And when building projects need doing, just say the word, tell me how you want it to look, and I'm sure I can find the time to help you out with it.

Vote WorkerDrone for Lawmaker. I won't abuse your trust.

I believe OwenQ would make an excellent chieftain, from what I have known of him. But, I am somewhat skeptical about Workerdrone's candidacy. Since, as I have been told, a major duty for the Lawmaker will be mediating law. Bottleneck will require someone of great levelheadedness, which is not a word I would often use to describe Workerdrone. Not in insult him personally, of course. But, I fear that he may not react in a completely desirable manner in many situations.

Workerdrone may yet prove himself to be of another nature, but we shall see.

Depending upon events in the immediate future, I may end up running for either position.
The grumpiest tree you ever did see.

Character: Hamel, previously Chieftain of Ancient Bottleneck, a founding father of the Confederation of Bottleneck. Currently a hibernating soul.

I'm none too fond of getting fancy or meshing words together to sound nice, as some of my opponents already have. I like to keep things simple and natural, and that's how I'm intending to run my 'campaign', as it were, and to rule if the village is so kind as to elect me.

The reason I want to run is simple: Bottleneck is a great place. (The nice hat is a big bonus.) Unless I'm mistaken, I'm still quite new by most standards (been here for just over a week). I haven't been there for everything that's gone on, but from what I understand the fact we're still here is a fairly good testament to our solidarity. Ever since I've arrived, I've found the community to be helpful - often offering it without me explicitly asking. And I've done my best to return the favor: I do what needs done, help those who ask for it, and offer it where I can.

But being a nice guy isn't the most important part; It's level-headedness and bowing to the will of the people. Currently, the game is small enough to support a true democracy. I intend to keep things as they already have been; important decisions are made by community consensus or people making contributions of their own free will. Where opinion is weak or non-existent, I'll do my best to take decisive actions as they are needed. If the people wish me to be, I will be the head of negotiations with other towns and other organizations.

The core of my message is that I am active, reasonable, and have a strong desire to help better the community. I can do this with or without the position, most likely, but in the future who holds it may well be of considerable import. I am willing to shoulder the responsibility, accept any risks that may come from it, and wield any such powers as dictated by how the residents of Bottleneck wish it to be.

So go and vote, be it for me or for any opponent that may crop up to run against me. I'm sure only the finest will answer the call, and I look forward to the next few days.

I like it that my opponent has proffered his response, to the general public, in fact I encourage people to run, if not for the reason that he thinks he can do the job right, then because he thinks he can do the job better. That's great! If the people decide someone else fits the role better than another, then its likely that person will turn out to.

However I offer this as a rebuttal, pre-election. A Lawspeaker, who should only amounts to a sheriff in title, meaning the one who carries out the laws passed by the PEOPLE, meaning the community as a whole, the speaking role in general, the voice of the people in dealing with criminals abound. Not and omniportant overlord, or even a slightly empowered lawMAKER.

In no way should the lawmaker get the say in creating laws at whim. It should be decided by the people what is right and what is not. And the Lawmakers job to enforce for, mediate, and defuse cases.

My opponent believes that I can not properly handle certain situations. Really its all a matter of your outlook. I know how to mediate and defuse a situation between multiple people, and I know how to make the tough calls. I won't falter on any of them. Ever. While I agree with my opponent that I am not the 'nicest' person around, this can be deduced fairly easily, I do not agree that being 'nice' is not what a Lawspeaker needs. A law speaker needs to be fair, hardy, and level headed. And for the various mentioned reasons of my personality or outlook, I am very trustworthy, very fair, and when shit hits the fan, very level headed.

And its not just when things get out of control. I've said it before and I'll say it again. When I know something needs to be said, and everything is a serious matter when dealing with the like of criminal intent, I shall say it, and I will use reason to follow through the course. And if it means that such a 'nice' facade is to be abandoned, then so be it. I am not here to kiss your boos boos. Sweet as a sugar isn't my forte. If someone does something bad, and there's no hiding it, shit me not, for I will not shit you.

Sugar makes no use when compared to getting the job done. And it by no means says that I am bitter, it merely means I am prepared to do what I have to with minimum amount of pleasantries. And really.

Do you want someone wasting your time, or do you want someone to investigate who snagged your steel? Or tea pots? Or important equipment.

Reason. Trust. Serious. And level-headed. I am willing to devote my time into making this community run smooth.

Vote WorkerDrone.

Actually, a lawmaker would make the laws. The proper title is Lawspeaker.

Also, I'm pretty sure you do not have an opponent. KoE is running for Chieftan :D

I believe he was referring to Hamel, who is kinda-sorta-maybe gonna run for something. And with whom he had a long discussion about his level-headedness or lack thereof.

All right, just to make this race interesting, I'm throwing my hat in as well, for the position of lawspeaker.

I will not make big speeches, because I think my in-game behaviour speaks enough. I will not make big promises, all I promise is that I'll try and do my best to keep Bottleneck a pleasant place to live in.

So, if your heart tells you to, vote Goran Starodub.
