Who does game design here?

Postby Jubal » Fri Jun 11, 2010 4:31 pm

Bar the devs, obviously, who likes designing & producing games and game modifications here? I do quite a bit myself, which is one reason H&H appeals so much to me (though my skill level is a millionth of the devs of this game, clearly)...

I don't do game design but I know a bit about programming, and make small games as a hobby.
I occasionally use Blender for small scale 3D games or Scirra Construct for 2D games.
I'm also learning C++ atm.

That's cool. The website I run (Exilian) has a game creation section, but I've never really got it off the ground. My own project (which is more or less the only thing on there) is called Raiders & Traders (link), it's a small and rather crap browser based multiplayer (or at least, moving towards multiplayer) city builder. I rarely have any motivation to work on it because nobody really ever seems terribly interested, though. I modify Rome TW and Mount & Blade too.

In fact, before I started with RaT I tried to make an RPG with similar ideas to H&H (my plan included proper player building, permadeath, and other such things). My programming was nowhere near up to it though.

I do a bit of hobbyist stuff, I've used a bunch of languages for them (python, java, c++) I typically stay away from 3D modeling (I get a friend to do it or I just use primitives with textures)

I don't really make decent sprites either, I've done a bit of modification in photoshop etc, but coding is really my interest

I've been doing a good amount of experimentation with ActionScript 3 recently. Fun stuff. My major is game design, so I should be pretty good at it within the next few years. I love coding. It is my passion.

I've written a few minor games as well, mostly in C and Python using SDL (only 2D so far, but hey, who needs depth?).
Me and Loftar made a game together about 10 years ago, called "Kviden Fighters" or "kvidha" for short, which we've been meaning to
show you all some time.
It's basically a real time version of Worms, but more incomplete, more unbalanced, more awesome and/or completely useless weapons.
It can be totally fun, though, if you have the right mindset. 'Out of the frying pan and into the fire' captures the soul of kvidha pretty well.
It's compiled and running under Linux now, but it was originally written for Windows (or DOS?), then ported with SDL, so it needs to be
ported back.

I made a few games, once.

Also I used to run a tiny french browser-based MMO that had the same ideals as H&H (except the game would start at the prehistory, and after a couple real life years, the world's technology would have advanced into space age). As in H&H, everything had to be crafted by the players. No NPCs also.
It was all PHP and html with a lame javascript map. There was no server; everything ran through player interaction.
Lost interest, forgot about it. I keep promising myself I'll work on a better version in Flash or something.

I'm not a game designer, per se, though I am learning it. The closest thing I've come to actual game design was doing a few basic codes for my friend's game and a few stand-alones using Game maker (Though that was ages ago). I'm more into the art/3d design part of a game. It's more fun, in my opinion. C:
