looks more like a man powered version of a gravity wheel (perpetuum mobile) to me
i wonder how much work they have to afford to keep it turning

btw burning man seems to rock
anybody ever been there and can tell a story ?

I knew there was a gear system but I didn't know they were pedaling it, that's fuckin awesome. I wish I had the skillz to build that, but who knows, I might be able to...

Edit: thought it was more like the gravity wheel also. ^^

Yes, I live not very far from the Blackrock Desert and went to burning man about 12 years ago. Its fun if you enjoy crowds, funky art, eclectic music styles and odd people. Stories? Sorry, nothing all that special to tell - drunks, naked people ( some nasty looking weirdo's) and all night parties.

4 day stay
Protips:
Ice - you need at least 3 100 quart coolers filled with block ice. Not party ice - buy a large screwdriver for chipping ice and tie that screwdiver to the ice chest handles
Water - at least 2 gallons per person per day - take large 2.5 gallon containers ( its an effin' desert and will be hot/windy as hell)
Beer - better take 1 case of cheap beer per person per day- morons waste beer (sandbaggers and stupid people leave half full containers all over the place)
Toilet paper and lots - yes, you will thank me for this.
Hard liquor - take shitloads of medium quality stuff
Standard medical - people get sun and wind-burnt so bring regular skin cream lotion/sunburn cream
Ez-Up and high quality rope and very long stakes or homemade re-bar stakes - the wind will rip shit apart or blow tent/awnings, tarps into someones car.

Superpro Tip:
Rent a U-haul cargo truck and load it with all of the communal gear - stop in Reno and buy a $15 junk couch from the salvation army. Comfort rules all.
Cable chain and lock all the chest coolers together - people will steal anything not bolted down. Optional: lock the cooler lids closed with combination locks ( everyone knows the combo and no key needed)
Do not go onto tribal land - the tribal police will effin' rip you off and generally make everyone wish they had never left home. Not kidding. These guys do what they please under color of authority. Same with the drunken local indians, do not fuck with them - they are looking for some easy pvp and know that you-all are a bunch of city noobs.
No shortcuts, do not leave the main roads, if you get onto a dirt/gravel road then stop and turn around. heh.

No it's not. A normal bike works because you're using the torque from the stationary frame to turn the wheel within the frame, and thus the wheels push against the ground and propel you forward. However in this case, they are inside of the wheel which is turning. There's nothing stationary to get torque against, nor is there any sort of chain or exterior mechanism which could be pulled around to cause pull against the ground. The most likely case is, as they said, it's using some sort of gravity mechanic. It's entirely possible they're peddling, but to move the weight in the center forward, thus causing the wheel to roll forward to center it's gravity. Thus it works somewhat similar to that old school experiment with the weight in the tin can which you can roll and the weight shifting inside will cause it to continue rolling until it balances itself.

Found a larger picture. Seems how it works is the "gear system" is mounted to the inner ring. As they pedal it pulls the gear system, which their seats are attached to, up and back around the circle, thus, as I assumed, changing the center of the wheel's gravity and driving it forward. It's a pretty neat looking device, but I can't imagine being able to go very far without accidentally running someone/something over.
