It might be pointing out that in rl survival situations a lot of people end up in serious trouble with foot gear problems. If you are wearing shoddy shoes when you get lost in the wilderness, or if you lose your shoes in the same situation you will find that trying to travel around at all in bare feet leads to punctures, sores, infection and being crippled. And that in turn frequently leads to being unable to survive because you can't walk around enough to get firewood and do other basic tasks. I remember someone in search and rescue once saying how amazing he found it to find people fully dressed, but barefoot and crippled or barefoot and dead because it hadn't occurred to them to rip up their clothes to make foot protection of rag which would have been quite effective.
