Caravan trading is awesome and to make it work without teleporting I think they'd just have to make building roads easier+faster, perhaps add bridges, make multiple forms of transportation like bringing a wagon for more space to trade lots of stuff add more horses/cows to make it go faster and fast horses without wagons behind them or just a small cart tied to it to or only side bags to make small more casual trades and then I believe trade will thrive

There also needs to be consideration given to near brick strength modular walls that can fit into a single wagon and mobile claimage as well as the linking of wagons and buoy/dock milestones.
