It's because players are way ahead of me, and my friends refuse to even try the game for that reason.

I have a friend who wont play for that reason either. I tell him about the politics and how my stuff is going but he will not play unless everyone is on even footing, and he is very dickish about it. It pisses him off to no end, when I tell him about me, say, giving away food, or pearls, or metal, even to fellow villagers, but he will not play the game.
