This is going to make me sound like a complete fool, but I found it hilarious afterwards.

I'd been playing all day and wasn't really paying attention anymore, watching TV instead. It was dark ingame and I was all alone. As I'm sitting there chopping a tree, I glance back at the game window and suddenly see a person standing right next to my tree!

After the initial shock, I realise it's just my own character.

THAT is how paranoid this game makes me. xD

Probably one of my favorite things in this game is running into new settlements and chatting with the people. I try to be as friendly as possible, but you never know. Sometimes you find allies, sometimes you find find tradepartners, or people who want to be alone, or sometimes just murderers. Already on this map Ive almost been killed for saying hello, and I tend to be very careful about these sort of situations.

In general tho, a good rule of thumb is...if they are clearly active and ignoring you, give up. They probably just see someone yelling in a language they don't know, and are telling their village-mates "SOME CRAZY FOREIGNER IS YELLING AT ME! HE WONT LEAVE! HELP!"

Ah wow those all sound crazy. I personally have not engaged in any pvp what so ever so I can't relate to you guys. I have always played it safe.. probably too safe..I can't fathom what it's like to build your character up to such a degree just to stick him through a wood chipper like that in one of those wars.

I have no feeling of this excitement anymore.

Maybe it's because I simply don't care, or shrug it off, if I die.

But I don't fear bears or boars, nor do I fear any player I meet. Because I know most of the strong ones are pretty rational.

i dont fear ingamedeath either.
but its still exiting for me what kind of person you will meet - be it the way nil explained, or "just" the different cultural behavior (be it irl culture or ingame culture)

You're in a village with your friends, only been playing a couple of days, still havn't got a wall up (for some reason).

Suddenly, bear-caped spectacle-wearing archers and swordshearthlings come charging into the village, firing and slashing.

People die. You run. One of the swordshearthlings come chasing after you, locking onto you with a missed shot. You take a shortcut through someone's double-gated fenced land. As you go through the gate, you spend a moment shutting the gate behind you, and charge head-first into the forest. The murderer is still chasing you, and your stamina is running low.

You suddenly drop a speed. He's catching up. You've nearly reached the dock. He hits you, misses, you get on the boat and sail to safety.

This was my scariest experience. All my friends, except a couple, were dead. My heart was literally pounding like a drum.

Good times. Whilst I was pissed at losing all that work, at least I still had my head - and that makes a good game, that I can get that rush from it.

me and some friends mad our own town as well but we got attacked by only the bear-coated, spectacle wearing dude. got me killed... sigh... first death ever

My Scary experiences have been of late while I have been building my Palisade. Every time, and I MEAN everytime I go AFK while chipping stone, I come back to the Computer with a Boar or Bear, STARING!!! At me, Just sitting there with nothing in its LOS and only like 20 or less tiles away from me... STARING!!! WATCHING ME!!!...

They are always watching me... ALWAYS!!!

I've been playing since the end of world 2, and i have never once been killed or even attacked by another player. Probably a combination of good luck, humility, and a comically-bad-but-just-good-enough knowledge of languages. I have met many other hearthlings in my travels (most of them far, far stronger than me), and have never been attacked just for saying "Hi". Hearing other people's experiences, I consider myself lucky, since apparently some of you crazy bastards just kill on sight. But i'd say that some good suggestions for remaining alive when visiting your neighbors are: 1) Don't wear anything threatening/expensive, 2) Don't be moving around and active while talking, 3) Don't venture any further into their territory/village than you have to in order to make contact.

So the most fail-safe way to stay alive in the hearthlands? Be nice, but more importantly, be lucky :P

And as far as boars and bears go? Fukkit, you're on your own

cave ins scare the fuck out of me. its more than a "ops I mined into an unsupported area, oh well" its more of a "HOLYFUCKDDBDJFRKJRKLGNRKGNRLFJFVU!!!!1!!1!" meeting new people who none of my village know always fills my body with adrenaline.

I haven't been playing for long but running into new people always worries me because I never know how they're going to react. So far my scariest experience was this:

I decided to try hunting a bear for the first time and I was fighting it in a boat. So, I'm sitting in the river chucking stones at it, reading the forums while waiting for my aim to get as high as possible. Every once in a while the bear "twitches" trying to get at me, but of course it can't. However, the server must have lagged as it was twitching because I looked at my screen and saw the bear RIGHT on top of me. Of course it was just lag and nothing happened.

I think my heart almost exploded.
No, I am not TLO from SC2. I just happen to be a petite girl in real life and thought I was clever. Apparently, so did TLO.
