You don't have to clearcut.

I figured someone would tell me that cabins take too long to build or something.

Or did you mean buckets? People will kill you if they find you grinding buckets. It's thought of like an exploit (because it's so easy).

Personally, I also like to remove stumps. The LP gain is crazy but it takes forever.

I get pissed when I see huge swaths of tree stumps. :(

I do, too. Imagine my annoyance when I came online to find MY forest clear cut...

Even the apple trees!

Jason, you seem to be more appreciating of this game then much more higher level players. Just one thing, if you die, do not rage quit, just start over and treat it as a fresh start.

Keep up your attitude like this, and the forum will have no problem helping you, just remember not to ask any questions that cannot be answered by the wiki, (something like, what skill do I need for building a house, just look up a house and see what skills it requires). Also, I've never had problems with enemy griefers, if you keep to yourself and be nice to the people you meet, you shouldn't have much of a chance to get griefed. The worst thing that could happen to you, or any noob is theft. In that case, find out how the got in, and prevent it (make a palisade, etc.)

Also, here are some beginning tips. Get yeomanry and claim your place fast. Build a palisade. Hide valuable stuff behind a rock if you don't have a claim, for at least a bit of protection. Finally, if you see a term you are confused about, refer to the wiki.

Yeomanry
Stake Claim
Palisade
Timber House
Farming
Foraging
Hunting
Scents

Those are a few basic topics to help you out

Thanks again for more information Agarret. Things are getting a little smoother. I have to get used to the interface and how to use everything but with the wiki and this topic I'm doing a decent job, I hope, finding out how. One question I did not see on the wiki was this:

How do we know what server we're on?

There is only one server. You may have been confused by past references to different "worlds", this simply refers to the fact that the server has been wiped occasionally. We are now on World 4, as the server has been wiped three times now.

jasonresno wrote:My next assumption is that the whole world is "unsafe"? By that I mean: you are always at risk be it from animals or other players? Assuming that's true: is griefing a big deal here? Will I ever have time to level my newb or will I be ganked almost instantly? Final question: Does the actual game have an active community?

Really all these questions are determined by dumb luck. Where you spawn determines many of these things. Some areas are crazy, and you could be killed by a stranger just for being online. Some places people are friendly and helpful. Some places you won't see a single soul for quite a while. A healthy dose of paranoia will greatly increase your chances of survival, and be understanding if others act paranoid to you.
Regarding animals, animals can be dealt with by being careful. At first they will be a danger, but people will always be a danger, which is the beauty of the game.

Honestly, you should take it as lucky that you started with no-one around you....it will give you some breathing room to sort yourself out and figure out the game. Even as long as I've been playing, seeing someone I don't know boat by me when I'm inland causes a moment of panic, hehe.
But yeah, treat it as what it is...a perma-death semi-survival game, and you'll have a great time. Also, one last thing to remember...with wildlife, chickens and rabbits are always safe (so far), Boar and Bear are always dangerous, and everything else is only dangerous if you attack it. So don't. hehe.

Edit: One last thing, my favorite way to grind up a new char is getting pottery and finding clay, then making and dropping teapots, while increasing exploration to get those yummy foraging points. Not as fast as buckets, but much less likely to get you hunted down. And don't forget to move your peace slider towards peace.

Actually, me and my friend built three log cabins in no time and didn't even put that much of a dent in the surrounding area, even after building a loom and such. In fact, it was hardly noticeable until we built those timber houses, but even then.

And people will outright murder you for anything if they think they can get away with it. The biggest danger when chopping trees is that a boar could always be hiding nearby. I recommend getting Ender's client.

True story. I was busting a stump and I looked away for like 20 seconds, looked back and I was knocked out with a boar atop of me.
