You guys think too hard. Just learn some Russian phrases and start speaking them in area chat in all surrounding areas at least once ever 4-5 IRL hours for about a week straight.

actually thats pretty much what I did as a hermit in W4 and it still turned out good for me :D

Usually though, having folks around is nice for trading and defence.

Right now in the early stages, I just break everything that is unclaimed, and sap every quality node I can get my hands on but can't call my own. Also take boats from people.

Juxt beat the crap out of all russians near you, they don't know how to use the combat system anyway. Remember last fight at Nople? 16 vs 16...16 dead russians, 3 dead non russians in the end. That is how you create the perfect spot to live.

Russian bodies raise the soil quality as well btw.

Grog I expect everyone I see to have motives of killing me, having defense skills is part of the game for me, not just griefing.

Although you could settle an area with q10 everything, an area with rather meager resources works almost as well. Nothing higher than q30 (water, soil, clay) won't attract any serious attention. Claiming the clay and water resources should help.

Ultimately though, creating the treeless wasteland is the only way to encourage the noobs who spawn you to move before building.
