Oops. Somewhere in there in those newb days was another death I failed to mention. When I was re-spawning I didn't know what the hearth secret was for so I entered some random word. Then some stairs appeared and I was curious so I went down them. I ended up spawning in some blood-thirsty Russian village where I was killed on sight.
