I had my Conversation Contraption in one pocket, which was doubling up as my map so I didn't get lost, leather Wallet to keep my copper and silver coins in my other. My gate keys were in my back pocket, so I had very little space to store things. I had to put the feather into a knot of my coat sleeves around my waist.
As for my Study Inventory, I kept it in my hand and sporadically inspected and repaired the Cone Cow. It was fascinating.
(I actually bumped into a couple walking their dog at one point, my head was down, and all. Completely oblivious to all around me.
