I'm sorry to hear that you've lost your first character. Unfortunately, it's a fairly common thing to die when you're still learning to ropes.
As you've already said, the five thousand Learning Points you lost are nothing in comparison to the massive stockpiles gathered by people like NaoWhut, Sabinati, and others, likely tallying upwards of the billions over their careers. That said, everyone starts out at the beginning and few get to keep their first characters, whether they're lost to accidents or the arrows of passing players.
Don't lose heart. You'll be able to recover from your loss and maybe learn the same lesson that many players have learned along the way: You can't take anything from a game. Not your bear cape, your bunny slippers, or your fishing pole. Not that stone ax you first crafted when you began playing. Not even the silver that you may be lucky enough to find and painstakingly dig out of the ground.
What you can take are the stories and perhaps even the friends you make along the way.
