First and foremost, don't feel bad about using alts. Everyone has access to alts, everyone has access to Enders. No one has asked people to stop using these tools, as far as I know. Don't limit yourself by not using them.

Secondly, on death, I lost my main to a bear early in this world and it sucked bad. It was painful to build up again but wasn't horrible.

Risk is part of the fun of this game. For a while I was travelling half an hour down a river to transport high quality water. It was intense because I knew someone could come by and kill me. Risk and conflict keep this game exciting, other wise it is just virtual chores.

Your friend quit after dying. Most of my friends quit when the glee of trees hitting 40q wore off and we were not spending hours foraging apples. You will have more fun building, conflicting, and rebuilding than you will building and quality farming.

I have lost fortresses in every way imaginable. When I lose a fortress, I think "That was good while it was running, let's start another and do it again!" and just laugh at it. When you lose a fortress, you don't lose that much. Dying on HnH is a much more significant thing, you lost so many hours spent studying curios and eating foods to increase your FEP, you spend much more time on a HnH character than a fortress.
