But welcome to the community, the best pieces of advice that can be given:
1. Beware of most( but not all) russians
2. For a new player, you should apply to a nice village in the forums to help you learn the basics, then decide whether hermiting or village life is for you.
3. Have fun is the most important
4. Read the wiki (http://www.ringofbrodgar.com)
5. Read the stickies, and keep Infprmed of most things on the forums
6. Have even more fun

Learn everything your damn self, that's the fun of it.
You can go to a village and learn all the tips and tricks after getting your shit kicked in a few times.

I saw a decayed italian village. PandAmonium also has (at least) 1 italian villager.

This game is awesome, but also kinda strange. I feel so stranded right now because the world map is so huge and still haven't met anyone yet. Found an abandoned boat and used it to cross a river. I'm starting to craft small items and keeping myself alive with rabbit meat, rats and apples. I just feel like Bear Grylls.

Ants are a great source of protein, just what you need in a survival situation. They can be dangerous, but they're slower than hearthlings, so a real ultimate survivor would trick the guards to get to the delicious larvae and pupae inside. Soldiers and queens can be used to further hone your survival skills.

In HnH you get killed by EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. There are many greifers in this game. Stay away from people unless you know them for sure and there your freinds. ANYONE with a sword is instantly deadly, or any weapon in there hand. See in one with a green cape or Purple claok INSTANTLY LOG OFF! 1 more thing, you can die from having a splinter in your foot if you have it in there for a long time. WELCOME TO H&H!
