I would say don't be too scared of other players you may meet, especially with a young character - you don't have that much to lose, and knowing people in your local area can be really useful starting out.

The more you progress with your character, the more unfriendly to others you become, and you slowly start to go insane and build 5-10 layers of brickwalls around your house.

Annnnnyway. Read the wiki and the help forums, lots of helpful info there. I did my best to cover the nub stages of life in my guide since most of the advanced characters forget what it's like at the start with no knowledge. Figured I'd get it written before I forgot myself Despite what most people seem to think, I started 2 weeks before W4 ended so I'm pretty young game wise compared to most of the "vets".
