In any case, as for the thread, Black Skills give reason for people to be afraid. If it weren't for black skills, everybody would be prancing around in their underwear, never making swords, never building walls and generally building all over the place.

Fear makes you keep your stuff in walls, under claim, locked down, in a cave, out of sight, far away and generally cave-adaption-inducing behaviour.

That's bullshit. We have no underwear.

Furthermore, it doesn't take black skills to convince you to build walls, make claims, or to start making swords and slings. Moochers and thieves are reason enough. Trolls are, too.

... I don't get why it's amusing to edit? I mean, yes, it's amusing that the grown man with the explosives training that gets to play with several thousand tons of metal every day at work spent so long whining that it's not faaiiir about a computer game, but really, he's not a girl. I'd have noticed.

Oh, we have a loft. There's no need to put stuff under the floorboards. I'm just impressed how well he manages his keyalts, because that's about the one thing that doesn't correlate with the amount of time he spends looking for stuff offline. Although I will admit that the very low-q carrots I just found lurking in the back of the fridge were probably my fault.

My first week and a half of play has gone as follows.

Character 1- Longest lived so far, mainly because I started in the middle of freakin nowhere and didn't see a single person until the end. On the http://algeralith.info/HavenMap/ at x:-35 y:60 at the northwest side of the mudflat. Please note the size of that "island".
Got a tiny house going with a claim and fence, and just started getting a farm up. Got a lot of skills too, even got ranging because I'm paranoid and was feeling so tough with my archery of 40 (highest skill) and Q13 bow. Then this:
I was out fishing, trying to get some perception food and come back to find my gate open and all my furniture missing. The stuff from my literally hour old herbalist's table is in the ground. So I'm thinking "damn, my first thief", figure out the tracking system and track the guy down to a little palisade at the western edge of the mountain to my northeast. No chance of getting anything back, I walk back and start work on rebuilding.
Me: *grabbing branches from tree next to claim*
Otherguy: *walks into view*
Me: Ahh, hello.
Otherguy: *punch* my land you leave *opens gate, destroys the hearthfire I rebuilt minutes earlier*
Me: *finally figuring out I can't talk while my character is stunned* What, why? I'm a newbie.
Otherguy: *continues destroying everything I've worked on, pausing to knock me back out the instant I come to* you go north, good land, this island (russian text)
Me: Fine, let me up and I'll leave, I was planning on relocating soon anyway because there's nothing here.
Otherguy: no speak english, you speak russian now
Me: I don't speak russian.
Otherguy: you threaten me, i murder now
Me: What?
Otherguy: Nothing personal, it's just business. (the only bit of actual grammar and punctuation, pretty sure he got it from someone else and had no real clue what he was saying)
Me: *dead*

Character 2-
Ok, after that torture session I recreated in a completely new area. And spawned directly ontop of a bear...

Character 3-
Did not inherit the now miniscule leftover LPs, took the hatch for another random area. Bear again...

Character 4-
Found a newbie town to pop into tuesday. Spent all yesterday getting setup with a couple other newbies with boosts from some very nice people.
1 hour ago I and everyone else was sniped from outside our palisade with a sling (rocks on our corpses), 1-hit kills all around as people left buildings or logged in.

Character 5-
Respawn to warn people.
Sniper was standing on our communal hearth area, said "Greetings from Croatia...", then 1-punch killed me.

Character 6-
Still waiting to respawn after the one guy gets tired of single handedly destroying a 15+ person town in under 10 minutes.

Sorry, but haven & hearth is exactly why every MMO that makes it out of the "hey guys, check out this thing I put together" stage has some sort of player protection.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute!

No, it's not just you.

You know, if I hadn't had years of experience playing games like this, I'd call you a paranoid-delusional schizophrenic. But since I'm so experienced, I therefore call you sane!

Nao whut speaks truth. My current main character has not only managed to stay alive for the past two days since then, but a really kind neighbour even GAVE me some things so I could be even better off (God bless his heart!) and warned me about some Russian raiders not far away. That's some good charity in this game, no?
