It's not pointless, it's very simple.

"Oh hey look at all these spare edels I have"
"Edels? Oh I'll give you $0.25 USD per edel"
"Well my, that sounds grand!"

Easy way to make some profit ingame or otherwise for what you have spare, it's about as ludicrous as trading curios in game in the first place.
