You can see someone from 50 tiles, and over 100 tiles you lose attack. Tested in w3 and w5.
As for designs of forts or 'vaults', the best layout IN MY OPINION is:
- Underground - Cliffs ruin almost anything aboveground, rivers ruin what they don't.
- A central fort with a proper brickwall impenetrable setup - You can even skimp, and use crossroads TO BE HONEST - Crossroads don't cascade (Bannerwalled)
- This central fort has a proper vault layout, I can provide pictures later at request. It should take over 9 days to reach the inside
- 50 tiles outward in every direction is a larger brickwall, this is so that before anyone even sees the hopeless task in front of them, they only see a large brick wall.
- Village claim must exceed 50~100 tiles in every direction outside of the outer brickwall
- If you are very security minded, the outer brickwall should also be bannerwalled and properly cascaded as the inside 'vault style'. The reason for this is a simple one.
- With the lack of XMPP (Fuck the world!), you have to scout this, 'tis pretty easy with a general bot and an inner milestone path. You can actually make a proper infinite milestone path which is also neat.
- Since it's underground you need to brickwall all ladders/mineholes top and bottom
- Everything at least 200 tiles from outer brick wall should be pclaimed
This is just a basic idea for a nice 'impenetrable' setup. Walljumps won't work, and if someone finds something like a chair jump, they will still have a hella hard time getting in.
If you really want to beef it up for antiwalljumping you can make a trench along the outer wall, 5 tiles wide for your milestone path and a lot of crossroads (so they can't be blocked).
The inner area between that outer wall/trench and the inner wall should be filled up with crossroads/signs, so that it has to be destroyed to get through.
Crossroads take much longer than brick walls to make but offer a few advantages:
1)They still need to be rammed
2)No one cares about how long it takes to ram a brick wall it's assumed anyone who cares can ram them in seconds with a ram, so no durability is lost
3)They do not cascade (Fuck yes!)
4)You can pack several of them on a single tile if you're particularly malicious, meaning that all the 'swirving' they have to do with the ram leads to less distance they can travel
5)Trees are easier to mass produce than bricks
The only con is that they take longer to build and need dreams. A proper 'dream field' is easy to make. With the help of two friends I built the Fields of Elysium (TM) in 1 hour, 200 dream catchers. That's 400 dreams every 20 minutes, enough to keep a steady supply as long as you can keep the wood (in the downtime have a bot do the work). The only problem you'll have is keeping the wine upkeep for dropping them off (assuming you don't deforest far from home and use courier alts

), and keeping enough forests to deforest.
I can usually manage 400 logs in 2~ hours with 1~2 bots. If you have it properly setup to deal with rocks and such , more power to you!
Something I'd like to note is that a vault in general is useless, that is a hearth vault. This idea is one for an actual village as far as I'm concerned. If you're going to take the work to make a vault, just make your village the vault. The banners are the real issue, you need a nice big flax field to manage that.
